Memory Stick Information
Since Sony first introduced the Memory Stick in 1998, there have been multiple Memry Stick formats. While most individuals associate Memory Sticks with Sony, a number of major flash memory card manufacturers have licensed Memory Stick technology and produce their own versions of the popular Sony technology which include SanDisk and Lexar. Sony likely licenses there rights for third party manufacturers like SanDisk and Lexar to produce its proprietary MemoryStick because it knows that these proprietary memory devices often fail the longevity test. The strategy must be paying off because Sony Memory Sticks are second only to CompactFlash and Secure Digital flasch compact memory devices.
The Memory Stick is often used with Sony Digital Cameras. Pictures are taken with the camera and stored on the memorystick. When the user is ready to put the images on the computer, a USB connected Memery Stick reader connected to the PC is loaded with the Memory Stick containing the desired images.
The SonyMemoryStick is also used in PDA's, cell phones, and portable Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) devices. The Sony Vioa line of Personal Computers also often feature a Memory Stikc portal. Sony Vaio which stands for Video Audio Integrated Operation, was introduced by Sony in 1996 just two years before the Memory STick and no seamlessly incorporates the Memory Stick technology into the PC for easy use among all of Sony's electronic media devices including cameras, vidoe cameras, Playstation, and prtable music devices.
The original Sony Memory Stick was about the size of a pack of gum and this size quickly became obsolete for use with newer consumer electronic devices demanding ever smaller flash mmemory and batteries. Sony's response was the Memory Stick Duo which was over half as small as the original Memory Stick. A high capacity, greater than 128 MB, Memory Stick Pro Duo was made available for high speed applications with and without MagicGate technology.
The latest Memory Stick, designed in collaboration with SanDisk is the Memory Stick Micro M2. This amazing Memory Stick Micro M2 is a third of the size of the Memory Stick Pro Duo and may eventually have 32 MB of storage. An adaptor is being made available for use with all Pro Duo devices.
