webmaster doing search engine optimisation services Search Engine Optimization, known commonly as S.E.O. or SEO is a term used to describe marketing a website to enhance the search engine ranking for targeted search terms and subjects. There are numerous self-reported SEO experts advertising their services to help your website rank as high as possible for relevant search terms. The whole idea of SEO is to get as many people to find your website when they type in a search word or search phrase in the search bar of a search engine like WWW.Google.Com, WWW.Yahoo.Com, WWW.MSN.Com, WWW.AOL.Com, WWW.Dogpile.Com, and WWW.Aks.Com.

Each search engine above has its own algorithm or mathematical code for how websites will rank for a particular search term. The search engines must keep these algorithms secret otherwise, webmasters would exploit the search engine to rank their own website artificially high for a given search term or search phrase. This exploitation of a search engine algorithm on large scale would result in a search engine returning less than optimal serach results and an overall poor user experience. For instance, if a webmaster knew that they could rank highly based on repetition of a key word they would simply type the same word over and over again and thus rank higher for a particular word. The rest of the website may be about a different subject all together, but based on the abundant use of a certain key word, the result would be a high ranking.

This is a very simple example, and all evidence points to search engines actually penalizing a website for overuse of a keyword or keywords. A term known as keyword density is used to describe the relative amount of times a keyword should be used relative to total wordcount and the recommended maximum density is 20%. This is actually a high level of usage for a keyword if you are writing content that is legitimate. The message here is not to spam your site with the same word repeatedly. Your website will likely be penalized by search engins.

Other practices to avoid are the use of hidden text or microfonts. Hidden text would be text that is the same color as the background screen and a microfont would be using a font so small that visitors to the site will not readily notice it.

Another practice to avoid is too frequent search engine submission. If you submit your website URL to search engine submissiion websites too often search engines will recognize this as spamming and your website will be penalized.

So these were are things not to do to try to increase your search engine ranking. Now lets discuss what webmasters should be doing to improve search engine rank. The single most important thing that you can do as a webmaster to assure that your website will perform well on on keyword searches is the frequent update to your website with original content. What this means is that you need to write interesting content or content that will provide a positive user experience. The content on your website cannot be stale. Don't expect what your wrote or uploaded to your website 6 months ago to keep you at the top of keyword search results. Original content and frequent updates does two things. First, it provided visitors to your site with a positive user experience. This should be the number one goal of a webmaster and it will reward you handsomely in the long-run. The other reason for original content is that search engines penalize sites that do not have original content. Duplicate content is recognized by webcrawlers and is penalized by search engines. If you lift content from another website, you are also at risk for copyrigt infringement and could be subject to fines or cease-and-desist orders. Frequent updates to your website are the other portion of the equation and this serves a two-fold purpose as well. Frequent updates give visitors to your website a reason to come back to your website. No one is going to visit a website multiple times to read the same content. The other reason for frequent updates is that search engines will reward a website with frequent updates with higher page ranking. If a search engine sees that your website is being actively managed and updated frequently, it will assume that the website is going to provide a positive user experience and therefore rank it higher.

A close second to original content is the number of links back to your website from other websites known as backlinks. In addition to the number of backlinks is the perceived ranking of the website that the backlinks are located as well as the relavence of the site where the links are located. If your website is linked to another website that has a very high page rank, your website will be perceived by the search engines as being an important website. There are a couple ways to go about improving the number of back links on your website. You can actively seek out opportunities with other webmasters to share links or if they are so generous, to allow you to place a link on their site without asking to place a link on your site in return. This is not likely if the webmaster is savvy since they will know that the relative number of incoming links and outgoing links on a website is important for page rank. A website with all outgoing links and no back links will not be ranked optimally. The other way to achieve a high level of back links is - and it bears repeating- providing visitors to your site with a positive user experience with original content and frequent updates. Such websites will undoubtedly find their way in the form of links throughout the web without any effort on your part. Fans of your website will want to share your link with others for any number of reasons.

So quit wasting all of your time trying to find loopholes in search engine algorithms and spend your time writing good content and serving your websit visitor needs.
